Discover DASH diet for blood pressure if you want an eating plan built by researchers, not a fad. DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute designed this eating plan to lower high blood pressure with regular grocery foods. U.S. News often ranks it the top heart-healthy diet and a leading plan for hypertension.

This diet for blood pressure works in two ways. First, it caps sodium at 2,300 mg a day, or 1,500 mg if your clinician wants a tighter target. Second, it raises potassium, calcium, magnesium, fiber, and protein from vegetables, fruit, whole grains, low-fat dairy, beans, nuts, fish, and poultry. Those minerals help blood vessels relax. Many people see a drop in readings within a few weeks when they also move more and limit alcohol.

What to eat on the DASH eating plan

For about 2,000 calories a day, a typical meal plan includes 6–8 grain servings, 4–5 vegetables, 4–5 fruits, 2–3 low-fat dairy servings, 6 or fewer lean meat or fish servings, 2–3 fats and oils, and 4–5 weekly servings of nuts, seeds, or beans. Sweets stay at five or fewer a week. Choose whole grains when you can. Season with herbs, citrus, garlic, and vinegar instead of the salt shaker.

A simple day: oatmeal with banana and fat-free milk; a hummus plate with vegetables and whole-wheat pita; baked salmon with green beans and a potato; fruit and unsalted nuts for snacks. That pattern is a low sodium diet you can repeat with different produce each week. Comparing it vs Mediterranean if you like olive oil and fish—the plates overlap. DASH is stricter on sodium and leaner on cheese.

How to start and what else matters

Read labels. Bread, condiments, canned soup, deli meat, and restaurant meals hide most salt. Rinse canned beans. Cook more at home. Many people also use special diet cookbooks, salt-free seasonings, grocery delivery, or low-sodium meal services to stay consistent. Pair this diet for blood pressure with walking, a healthy weight, sleep, and medicine your clinician already prescribed. It can support cholesterol and weight goals too, but it is not a substitute for care if your numbers stay high.

DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. It’s a diet developed specifically to reduce blood pressure in those with hypertension. But scientists understood later on that this diet resolves tons of other health issues. It reduces cholesterol, prevents stroke and heart failure, and brings the weight down to a healthy level, even for those with obesity. Plus, it is the best diet to prevent diabetes. Besides controlling blood pressure, people following it managed to improve insulin resistance. The DASH diet wasn't originally designed for weight loss, but there have been some studies proving that this eating plan helps people get rid of unwanted pounds. The DASH diet balances all the necessary nutrients and minerals, like calcium, potassium, protein, and fiber, that are responsible for brain and overall organ function. It improves the condition of your hair and skin as well. What’s convenient about this diet is that you don't have to calculate and monitor each nutrient: you just need to reduce your salt intake and eat certain recommended foods, for instance, fruits, vegetables, grains, protein-rich foods, and dairy products. Compared to trendy crash diets, DASH is different. This is a complete lifestyle change. It’s for people who need to take care of their eating habits throughout their lives. There’s no cutting out or starving involved. You can have all sorts of tasty dishes.
